That’s right – Initiative. This is the one little thing that is setting us apart from the pack. I’m not going to bring us down by linking or quoting the latest numbers but there are thousands of us out there at the moment applying to the same jobs and clogging up the same HR desks. The chances of you or me actually landing an interview with this method is slim. Which brings me back to my point: Initiative. The only way to make something happen is to make that phone call, go to that networking event, or add to your bank of experience with volunteer activities.
This also means exploring new avenues of connecting with people. A few weeks ago I read a NY Times article and happened upon a comment I particularly agreed with and looked up the commentators name to realize he was in the exact area of law I wanted to be in. So I emailed him and he emailed me right back. Obviously it didn’t turn into a job but it is just one more network that could help someday. And you never know, maybe the next time it will turn into a job. You never know. But without taking that leap or pushing yourself into action – you never know what could have been.
So go – go take some initiative.
