The stress of job hunting can really start to take a toll when you apply to several positions everyday for months with no response. Or, worse yet, you get a response but it was a rejection and possibly from a job you really didn’t want anyway. We all lose that positive edge at these moments which prompted my less than positive rant yesterday.
How do we get that positive outlook back after so many months of defeat?
1. Take the day off. That’s right – rather than sit in front of your computer all day searching and applying – take the day off completely. Don’t even go near your computer. Go outside, read a book (non job search related), or go see a movie.
2. Explore something you’ve been wanting to do but didn’t think you had the time. There must be some activity or group you’ve been wanting to try or join. Now is the time to do just that thing. In fact, you might meet some new people who can help with the job search.
3. Call your positive friend. We all have one, that friend who can always provide a good peptalk and makes us laugh. Give him/her a call for a little boost.
4. Stop thinking about yourself. Go volunteer for a day at a local organization. Getting out while making yourself useful for other people is a great way to recharge your job search. We are so focused on thinking and talking about ourselves all day that it can be very refreshing to think about other people.
Okay, now stop reading this post and go do something fun!
